In 1533, during the rule of Bikramjeet, Bahadur Shah attacked Chittor. Once again Jauhar was led by Rani Karanavati, a Bundi princess. Her infant son, Udai Singh was smuggled out of Chittorgarh to Bundi who survived to inherit the throne of the citadel. In 1567, when Akbar invaded Chittorgarh, Udai Singh fled to establish a new capital, Udaipur, leaving the fort to be defended by two 16-year old heroes, Jaimal of Bednore and Patta of Kelwa. Both died defending the fort which Akbar razed to the ground. Chittorgarh was never inhabited again but it always asserted the heroic spirit of Rajput warriors.

KALIKA MATA: The oldest temple in the fort, is of Kalika Mata housing an idol of the Goddess. Originally a Sun temple, it housed an idol of the Sun from whom the Sisodias claimed desent. A carving shows him riding his horse driven chariot. Its gates, pillers, roof and interiors are all profusely carved. The Surajkund tank flanks it on the northeast side.

MIRA TEMPLE: It is a simple cell surrounded by an open colonnade with four small pavillions at the corners. It houses a pictures which shows her praying before Lord Krishna.

PADMINIS: A three storeyed structure with arched openings stands in the midst of a beautiful water tank.

JAIN TEMPLES: Jain Temples are remarkable for their architecture. The five feet high square shrine Shringar Chauri built during Kumbha's region is famous for its intricate carving.

KIRTI STAMBH: Kirti Stambh the Tower of Fame dedicated to Lord Adinath the first Jain Tirthankar is the most spectacular.

VIJAY STAMBH: The most impressive monument however is the Victory Tower or Vijay Stambha built by Kumbha to commemorate his victory over Mahmud Khalji of Malwa in 1440.
