in Calicut The place is historically famous as the Portuguese led by Vasco da Gama first landed in India, at Kappad near Kozhikode in 1498 AD. He was the first European to reach India via the sea route, around the southern cape of Africa. Later the Dutch, French and British came to its shores. Thus, began a period of conflict of foreign powers for domination of trade in Malabar. Kozhikode was the capital of the powerful Zamorins. This age-old town still maintains its commercial traditions. The City of Pilgrim Centres- Calicut LOKANARKAVE TEMPLE:The wooden carvings in this temple is unique and survives the challengers of times. Even from the times of Kadathanadan kings, this temple was well known. The legendary hero "Thacholi Othenan" is associated with this temple. Temple is situated 6 kms. East of Vadakara Town. The main festival is in the month of March or April. TALI TEMPLE:Situated within the city is believed to have been built in 14th Century by the Zamorines. This temple was the venue of the famous seven days festival of literary assembly known "REVATHY PATTATHANAM" The temple is a fine example of Kerala architecture. JAIN TEMPLE:An old Jain Temple in Trikkovil lane close to Valiyangadi speaks of the early presence of Jains in this trading city. There are two temples in this compound and the northern one is considered to be older. The portico is adorned with beautiful carvings based on puranic themes and the interiors beautifully painted. PARSI ANJU AMMAN BAUG:Almost 200 years back Parsis settled in Kozhikode and engaged themselves in various trade. They built a Fire Temple at S.M. Street. BHUDHA VIHAR:The Budha Vihar situated at Customs Road near south beach of Kozhikode is a marked example of the presence of Budhists in Kozhikode. There is a good collection of writings on Budha. MISHKAL MASJIID KUTTICHIRA:Mishkal Masjid at Kuttichira in Kozhikode town is one of the oldest mosques, which is architecturally beautiful. This four storey structure built on wooden pillars proudly proclaims the architectural excellence of yester years. In 1510 the Portuguese attacked this Mosque and burned down some portion. The burned portions can even now be seen, on top floors. This mosque has been named after the rich trader who built it. MUCHUNTHI PALLI:A 13th century Vattezhuthu inscribed on a stone slab can be seen in this mosque. this is the oldest of the three mosques existing at Kuttichira, in Kozhikode town. The inscription narrates the donation of the property to the mosque by a Zamorine. This mosque too is built in the traditional Kerala architectural style. MOTHER OF GOD CHURCH:In 1513 A.D. a treaty was concluded between the Portuguese and Zamorine, in which latter allowed the former to erect a factory at Calicut to which was attached a Chapel........about 1725 the church was completed and dedicated to Mater De Deos and the Zamorine granted a garden in perpetuity for the support of the Church". The present church built in Roman architectural style was completed in 1942. There is no other shucrh in the whole of Kerala built in the same fashion. Apart from the architecture style a portrait of OUR LADY, more that 200 years old placed in the chapel adds to the attraction. ST.MARY'S CHURCH:There is a Protestant church called
St.Mary's Church at Calicut, which was built in June 1863....." The
St. Mary's Church built in 1860's at Nadakkavu was intended to cater to
the spiritual needs of the civil members of collectorate and the English
military residing at the barracks in East Hill. In September 1863 the
construction was completed and it was used for service. In the cemetery
adjacent to the church. There is a tomb dated 1717. The church has undergone
renovation number of times. |
